[ one week! ]

I CAN'T believe that we've only got one week left here in Dubai! Time is flying by and we'll be boarding the plane in no time. It's incredible how many odds and ends there are to wrap up ~ hours spent sitting in utility, municipal offices and banks to make sure that everything is closed off properly, money is wired home, letters obtained stating you owe nothing, etc. I thought arriving here was complicated but leaving is just as involved.

Amongst all this running around, it's given me plenty of time to dream about some of the little things I'm looking forward to back in Canada...

1. Normal street addresses ~ buildings with numbers, streets with names, giving and getting directions without having to think of a landmark

2. A decent hotdog, real bacon, good pizza with real pepperoni

3. No more bad B.O.

4. Walking through a mall without the heavy stench of incense burning through the corridor or people trying to spray you with perfume from every storefront

5. Target and Walmart ~ silly how you take these things for granted until you don't have them

6. Fresh fruit and vegetables that don't require a mortgage and stay fresh for longer than an hour

7. Shopping in a store without a clerk following 2 paces behind

8. No more converting dirhams to dollars in my head

9. A postal system that works and will actually deliver a package to me and not disappear

10. Customer service ~ whether in person or on the phone, someone who understands what I'm saying and can actually provide an answer

11. Normal driving ~ no one riding your bumper and flashing their lights for you to move, or backing up on the highway because they've missed their exit, or driving in the middle of 2 lanes

12. Being in the same time zone as our friends and family

13. Nature ~ breathing fresh air, the smell of grass, trees, 4 seasons, even a thunderstorm

14. Friendly people ~ a smile from a stranger

It's certainly the little things that make all the difference. And in seven days, my dreams will all come true.

[ is it just me? ]

IT SEEMS to happen to me a lot here in Dubai since so many stores have staff or security positioned inside the entrance to shops. Do you ever do this? :)

[ happy monday! ]

HOPE YOU all had a lovely weekend! As much as I wanted to sleep in a bit and have a nice, quiet couple of days, the lady in heels upstairs had other plans. Carpet really should be mandatory in apartment buildings. This is kind of how I felt today getting up...

It will be a very sweet day when we get to move into our own home again someday! On a positive note, I did finish up a project I've had on my list for quite a while. I'll share with you tomorrow. Stay tuned!

[ my thoughts on guest posts ]

GUEST POSTING is popular in blogland and it's a fun way to connect and discover other lovely blogs. However, not all guest posts are created equal.

Have you been bombarded lately with requests from companies to post guest posts on your blog? Well I have! And I just had to share my thoughts on this practise {please bear with me if this post gets long!}

To me, guest posts by companies are an entirely different ball game. They are like advertorials - those special advertising features you see in magazines - like when Scotties tissues runs a spread showing various bathroom decorating ideas, all the while, promoting their newest tissue box designs. And in magazines, placing those advertorials costs money.

While some people may feel flattered that they've been approached by a company wanting to post a guest post on their blog (their emails gush with compliments on how great your blog is), I feel differently. These companies should be paying you to do so. These posts are exactly like magazine advertorials but in blogland. Why should they be allowed to target your blog readers for free? They're YOUR blog readers - people kind enough to tune in regularly to read what YOU have to say, not to read what is essentially an "ad" by some company. {Unless of course they want to offer a fabulous giveaway - then that's a different story}.

I've been approached by lighting companies, real estate companies, vacation rental companies, design companies, clothing companies... all wanting to put up a post on my blog with no benefit to me or my lovely blog readers. No giveaway. No discount. All of them wanting links back to their company website. One company even said they'd do it at NO COST TO ME! Gosh, really?

Rather than purchase a sponsor ad in your sidebar, they take the approach of offering up some original content for your blog ~ they'll do all the work and all you have to do is post it. To me, it's sneaky and a free way for them to get traffic to their websites through you, if you fall for it.

What are your thoughts on these types of guest posts?

[ random thoughts ]

I ALWAYS get a laugh from other bloggers' random thought posts and Alexandra over at Coco Coterie posted some today and left me a comment to join in so here are my random thoughts for today:

1.  I love the smell of dryer sheets when I'm doing laundry

2.  why is it that there's a power outage every time I'm out here at our place in the woods alone?

3.  thank goodness the broom reaches through the window to brush snow off our satellite dish

4.  if I won the lottery, would I still eat Kraft Dinner mac & cheese? you betcha

5.  my husband thinks I'm obsessed with handbags and cute sneakers - I think he's right and I'm ok with that

6.  I miss the smell of my dog when she's back from the groomer in her little furry bodysuit

7.  bikini underwear isn't flattering on my body

8.  I need to work on my abs and butt (then maybe bikini underwear would be flattering on my body)

9.  I love the sound of sand crackling through the vacuum

10.  wouldn't it be cool if you could vacuum leaves too?

11.  how long does Bailey's stay fresh once opened in the fridge?

12.  why am I not just drinking it before it goes bad?

13.  I really need a haircut

Well there you have it - random thoughts swimming around in my brain. Feel free to post some of your own! Have a great Thursday!
