WE WENT TO our first movie in Dubai and decided on Hangover 2 since we thought the first one was pretty funny. Little did I know how uncomfortable we would feel watching it.
Sitting in a movie theatre surrounded by local Emirati watching this movie, in a country where you don't swear and you keep your shoulders, knees and cleavage covered, was a very awkward experience. Any exposed body parts were blacked out throughout the movie, and yet the language was so sexually explicit, it left us squirming in our seats. We both actually felt embarrassed! I'm not a prude and I've been known to drop the F bomb but the crude language was so over-the-top that I felt like an adolescent watching this with my mother, in a household where "fart" is a swear word.
I'm sure the first Hangover contained some of the same (though I don't remember it being as bad), but perhaps it was the fact that I was watching it here that made it seem so OTT. I would love to know what the locals thought of it, although I did notice that they weren't outwardly laughing their way through it. Have you seen Hangover 2?

Lisa,
I like to imagine that everyone there lives like "the Osbourne's" behind closed doors...

Hi Lisa, I have not seen it and have no desire to. I did on the other hand see "The Bridesmaid" and LOVED it. Females don't often do cmedy well, but it was very good.
I can imagine how uncomfortable it must have been in that theatre.
YIKES! In a few years I bet this will be a very funny story! Can only imagine how awkward this must've been for you both.
That sounds pretty uncomfortable. We actually went with a group of friends to watch it this weekend and it was much more graphic than the first, uncomfortably so-and I live in America!
We ended up taking the kids to see Pirates...but I am sure we will get around to seeing it.
That must have been so weird!! Obviously if you had seen it in Canada or the States there would have been plenty of people laughing even if it was OTT. If no one was laughing...yikes... Makes everything stranger!!

That's so funny! I'm just picturing you sitting there with a beet root red face. ;) I haven't seen this one yet, but I thought the first one was hilarious.
I'm surprised it was even allowed there. When we lived in Utah the Mormon Movie owners tried to ban certain R rated movies and it caused quite a stir. I think I would feel the same way! It would feel awkward to laugh I imagine.
I haven't seen
either one, but
did see Bridesmaids
recently! It was
raunchy, but U.S.
audiences are used
to that : ) Guess
you'll have to fire
up your Netflix account
for Bridesmaids!!

Lisa,
I can't imagine how awkward!! LOL!!!
I don't really care for movies that are that raunchy either. Its kind of a waste of time! There are so many other movies out there that can uplift, make you laugh, or make you think. Those are more worth it to me!
Hope you enjoyed your day!!!

I saw it -- it was over the top, but I was afraid of that going in to it. I think it was slightly more so than the first one. I could only imagine watching it there!
I could definitely see why you would be uncomfortable in Dubai...I was uncomfortable in Calif. But the part about "is this a PF Chang's?" made me laugh.
Hmmmmm...think I will wait to rent it then or netflix. First one was really funny, too bad this one was over the top.
On another note, I love the chasise on you post above, I want to melt in that chair :)

Well I loved the first one but there's always the chance that they try too hard with the second. It's a good story though:)
The first Hangover movie was actually funny. Sure it was a bit raunchy but the movie didn't have this mean intention that the second one has. The second one just looks nasty and it misses the essence (whether it's the direction, way it's filmed, etc.) that made the first one funny.
It's either funny or it isn't, doesn't matter who does it, men or women. Comedy, done well, is a difficult thing to do.
Oh heck must have been very awkward for you. I haven't seen either movie. (Don't get out much!) Love Linda x
