[ dubai driver's licence! ]

SO I'M now officially allowed to drive in Dubai! Luckily I was able to just transfer my Canadian licence to a Dubai licence with a simple eye test, lots of forms, some cash and a permission letter from my guy (!!!). I'm not kidding. He had to write a letter telling them that he has no objection to me obtaining my licence here! Gee thanks, sweetie.

Congrats!! Isn't that crazy that you had to have 'permission' from your man?? Wow, crazy. Be careful on the roads of Dubai!

Thank you for your sweet comment about my door, I really appreciate it Lisa! Hugs,

Congratulations Lisa, you are 'Queen of the Road'. I am terribly behind with my reading and have just been catching up with all your posts that I've missed! I love everything....your nightstand, the orchids in the whisky glass, the Pottery Barn beachy stuff. The table and chairs are stunning!I would so love something like that, but my charming daughter wipes her dirty hands on the chair covers, so you can imagine what a mess I would be left with. Shame about the Flea Market! Lots of love, Linda x

Too funny! What is it like to drive there? Better than driving in Ireland? Same side of road as Canada or is it like the Autobann in Germany!

Congrats! Seriously, be careful over there. I am sure it is difficult to remember things just are not like they are back home.

OMG, I would love to have read your mind when you were turning in that letter. My first thought was God bless America where women have rights.

Happy driving!

(If you're looking for post ideas I'd love to hear more details about the cultural differences that you've experienced. Just a thought.)

I suppose that along with all the fabulous cultural experiences come a few not so fabulous cultural experiences. Congrats on being a local!

Wow. Just wow. I feel pretty lucky right now. Though, truth be told, I don't really like to drive but I sure do appreciate the freedom to do so :)

A permission letter? That is one of the craziest things I've heard! What if you are a single woman, then what?

That's funny. Permission. Well that would not fly here in the US would it? We grow strong women.........
Blessings!

Hey all, if you're a single woman, then your company provides the NOC. Basically it is whoever is legally 'responsible' for you while you are on a resident visa in Dubai that has to write the NOC.

E.g. I am married but I have my own independent dubai residence visa via my company. So therefore my company has to provide me the NOC to be allowed to drive, they will not ask my husband as I am not under his visa.

The UAE and Dubai treat women very well, and any restrictions are generally upon ALL expats in general, whether women or men, we all have to get No Objection Letters for all kinds of things from whoever is our sponsor (be it company or spouse).

So even though it's kind of silly, at least everybody has to do it.

My husband himself needed an NOC from his company to learn to drive :)

Wow, that's a bit of a culture difference, huh?

Good luck driving in a new country! EEEK, it sounds terrifying (but exciting all at the same time).
